Earshot

Earshot Support

Last updated: 2026-10-18

Earshot sends whatever is playing on your Mac, as it plays, to anyone you hand the link to. They open it in a browser and hear it; there is nothing for them to install. Below: what you need, the steps for sending and for listening, and what each message on the page means. Anything not answered here, email [email protected].

1. Earshot is in a closed test

Earshot is not in the App Store yet. Right now we hand the app to a few people ourselves, along with a relay address and a stream key. Lost either one? Email [email protected] from the address we sent them to and we will send them again.

2. What you need

  • To send: a Mac running macOS 14.2 or later, Apple silicon or Intel, with the Earshot app, a relay address, and a stream key.
  • To listen: the link, opened in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge on a computer, or in Chrome on a phone. Safari on a Mac is still being tested; if the page stays silent there, open the same link in Chrome.

3. How to send

  1. Open Earshot and choose Send.
  2. Under Connection, enter the relay address and the stream key. The app remembers both.
  3. Pick what to send: Whole computer, or a single app such as Ableton Live.
  4. Click Start sending. The first time, macOS asks for permission to record the sound your Mac plays. Allow it; without it Earshot hears nothing.
  5. Click Copy link and send the link to whoever should listen.

The same link works every time you send, until you make a new one. Anyone who has it can listen while you are sending, so share it the way you would share a private address. Make a new link… replaces it, and the old link stops working for everyone at once.

4. How to listen

Open the link, type your name (the sender sees who is there, so the page needs one), press Listen, and turn the volume up. The page connects on its own; if the connection drops, it reconnects on its own too. If you have the Earshot app, its Listen side takes the same link.

5. What the messages mean

  • "This link does not work." The link arrived incomplete or changed on the way, often cut short by a chat app. Ask the sender to click Copy link again and send it fresh.
  • "This link has been turned off," or in the app, "This link has been replaced." The sender made a new link. Ask them for the new one; this one will not work again.
  • "Something else is already sending with this stream key." One stream key means one sender at a time. Close the other sender, which may be a second copy of the app or the Earshot plugin in Ableton Live, then click Start sending again.
  • The page shows Rejoin. The sender removed you from the session. Press Rejoin to ask back in.
  • Listeners hear nothing. Check that the app says it is live, that your Mac is actually playing sound through the source you picked, and that the volume on the listening page is up.
  • Silence when sending Safari. Safari plays its sound through a helper process, so picking Safari in the source list sends silence. Choose Whole computer instead.

6. Privacy

What leaves your Mac, what the relay logs, and how long we keep it are all on the Earshot privacy policy. In short: the relay passes sound through and never records it.

7. Contact

Email [email protected]. Say what you were doing, which browser or macOS version you were on, and roughly when it happened, so we can find it in the relay log.
